The Litigation Section of the Atlanta Bar Association held its first breakfast meeting of the 2018-2019 Bar year on September 14 in its year-long series, “Litigation of Our Times – The Specialty Trial Series.”
The first breakfast was on Data Breach Litigation & Trial. Speakers at the event discussed the dangers of data breaches, and the duty to protect information that is collected, stored and used by companies associated with personally identifiable information, personal health information, and personal financial information. The pace at which technology is changing across multiple platforms is making the protection of private information increasingly difficult, requiring the plaintiffs and the defense bar to be vigilant in addressing the changes in technology and the law.

“In this emerging field of litigation, it is interesting to see how the states differ on data-breach notification requirements and how the federal courts are split on the issue of standing to assert data-breach claims,” said Robert S. Huestis, Chair of the Litigation Section and BBGA shareholder. “It is a dynamic area of the law which should see a good deal of change in the next few years.”
The esteemed panel consisted of Cari K. Dawson, Alston & Bird, LLP; Michael L. McGlamry, Pope McGlamry; Phyllis B. Sumner, King & Spalding; and J. Cameron Tribble, Barnes Law Group. The moderator was Litigation Section Board Member, E. Tyron Brown of Hawkins Parnell Thackston & Young.
The next breakfast, The Restrictive Covenants and Trade Secrets Employment Trial, will take place on Friday, Oct. 12 at Ansley Golf Club, 196 Montgomery Ferry Drive, Atlanta, Georgia 30309 beginning at 7:30am.

The Litigation Section of the Atlanta Bar Association is the largest section by membership and is made up of litigators who practice a variety of law. It includes business litigators, plaintiff’s lawyers, defense lawyers, mediators and dispute resolution practitioners, as well as judges from several different courts.
The Section has nine monthly breakfast meetings each year where prominent speakers include litigators and judges. The Section also hosts other events, such as happy hours, CLEs and its annual Bench & Bar Reception in the spring.
